I'm not sure how banal evil is really. There was always the evil additive in society that goes way back, probably to the beginnings of documented history. I know in the US there has been propaganda intended to disinform and divide the citicenry going way back to its founding. With the advent of radio and television most especially after New Deal policies a lot of money has been spent to disinform and devide. The internet took off so fast that it became far too easy monopolize. You mix this with big money advertisement monopsoly and before long it became what it is today, filled with division and hate speech which in a huge way endangers trust and the integrity of truth.
No we cannot honestly say we miss the good old days, because to be honest they weren't all good for many, and sadly pointing out the truth of the past in many circles is forbiden.
