Quote Because of emotions and "you have to keep them pretty."
Last week I got a chance to visit Disney in Burbank, CA and chat with the directors and animators behind their newest animated musical, Frozen. We were shown one of the Snow Queen’s (Idina Menzel) songs, called “Let It Go” and guys, it will bring you to tears. No one
would be surprised to learn that Menzel’s voice is mind-blowing, but
there was so much work that went into the animation, I wanted to let you
in on it. It’s really easy to take things like this for granted in this
day and age and it was eye-opening to see how much attention to detail
there was.
First off, they brought in Menzel, who gave them a master class in singing and breath and talked all about her character. As a former
singer, I can tell you that every breath this animated character takes
is correct for the phrasing and musicality. That’s unheard of.
Lino Disalvo, head of animation for the film explained, “What we tried to do is establish a knowledge base so all — every single animator, they
were coming to the acting, and their choices were coming from a similar
place. So, that — when you see the hand of 60 different animators
animating one character, there’s a cohesiveness and there’s a continuity
there. And on top of that, we bring in someone like Idina Menzel, who’s
voicing Elsa … and I’d moderate like a Inside the Actors Studio,” he
laughed.
He added, “Historically speaking, animating female characters are really, really difficult, ’cause they have to go through these range of
emotions, but they’re very, very — you have to keep them pretty and
they’re very sensitive to — you can get them off a model very quickly.
So, having a film with two hero female characters was really tough, and
having them both in the scene and look very different if they’re echoing
the same expression; that Elsa looking angry looks different from Anna (Kristen Bell) being angry.
