One of my absolute favorite pieces of music, wonderful recorded, overpowering in live performance. And certainly one to blast loud when you do choose to play it: you will feel it in your chest when you do. This is the Verdi of "Aida" and "Rigoletto", but here writing a requiem mass at the death of his friend and national hero Alessandro Manzoni. Verdi was so grief-stricken he did not attend the funeral. There is much written about the mass and the history of it, but simply, just enjoy it here.
The first clip is just one brief aria, the tenor solo "Ingemisco" sung by one of the current leading tenor's, Jonas Kaufmann.
The second is a full performance. The tenor is a young Luciano Pavarotti.
