A million-dollar donation by a foreign-owned corporation to a Republican super-PAC has raised legal concerns and opened up the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court decision to new criticism.

Restore Our Future, the super-PAC supporting Republican Mitt Romney's run for president, received a $1 million donation in mid-August from reinsurance company OdysseyRe of Connecticut, a "wholly-owned subsidiary" of Canadian insurance and investment management giant Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited.

Fairfax Financial's founder is Indian-born V. Prem Watsa. Watsa serves as CEO and chairman and owns or controls 45 percent of the company's shares. He is also the chairman of the board of OdysseyRe, the American subsidiary.

Mitt Romney's "47 percent," meet Paul Ryan's "takers."

Romney is finally backing off his controversial comments, but the theme that the nation is divided into "makers" and government-dependent "takers" is one of long standing for both Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The GOP vice-presidential candidate has repeatedly made statements that suggest he sees America in Ayn Randian terms—that many citizens are just "takers," parasites who leech off productive citizens, the "makers." As this collection of rarely-seen videos shows, this has been a recurrent talking point for Ryan in small gatherings for years.

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—Taking a victory lap after their candidate’s win in the first Presidential debate Wednesday night, Romney campaign insiders today attributed his success to his strategic use of relentless lying.

“We worked for hours on this during the practice debates,” said the campaign manager Matt Rhoades. “We were, like, ‘Mitt, if you find yourself on the verge of saying something true, bite your tongue.’ ”

A new report reveals that Romney invested at a firm called Global-Tech, whose factories exploited Chinese workers.

Republicans like to paint Romney as an entrepreneur whose activities at Bain Capital have benefited Americans. In a campaign full of whoppers, that’s one of the biggest lies of all. Economist Paul Davidson recently pointed out the truth on AlterNet: “Romney has spent his career offshoring and outsourcing American production processes — and associated jobs — to countries like China where human labor is valued in the market at a very low wage rate.” The sub-human conditions at these production facilities represent things that Americans are strongly opposed to: child abuse, squalor, forced overtime, and peanuts for pay.

The CEO of PBS fired back at Mitt Romney Thursday, saying that it was "stunning" that the Republican candidate had singled her network out in Wednesday's debate.

Romney had one of his most memorable moments when he vowed to cut the federal subsidy to public broadcasting.

"I'm sorry Jim, I'm gonna stop the subsidy to PBS," he told moderator Jim Lehrer, who has worked for PBS since the 1970s. "I like PBS, I love Big Bird, I actually like you too, but I'm going to stop borrowing money from China to pay for things we don't need."

When you look back at what’s been achieved in President Obama’s first term, there’s a lot to take for granted.

We had a stimulus that stopped the layoff crisis and rapidly transformed the green energy industry across America. But many complain that it wasn’t big enough. We had health care reform that delivered the closest we’ve gotten to universal health care, a goal of progressives for a century. But many complain that it wasn’t a single payer, “Medicare for all” system.

Democrats passed student loan reform that took banks out of the financial aid business and used their share to finance millions more in new loans. We also had credit card reform, financial reform, Lilly Ledbetter, two new Supreme Court justices, a new treaty with Russia that shrinks our nuclear arsenal, and an end to both the war in Iraq and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. We had an administration that stopped defending the indefensible Defense of Marriage Act and a president who supports same-sex mar ... Read more »

Mitt Romney used to boast that his Massachusetts health care law should serve as a model for national health reform. After President Obama took that advice, and opposing the Affordable Care Act became an essential criterion for membership in the Republican Party, Romney executed a hairpin turn and began describing his reforms as uniquely suited to Massachusetts — not the whole country — if even that.

At the first presidential debate Wednesday night, he came full circle.

"What we did in Massachusetts is a model for the nation, state by state,” he said.

Romney’s belief that states should adopt their own versions of Romneycare contradicts the view he held last December while fighting for the Republican presidential nomination.

Asked by The Washington Examiner if he would recommend that "any states” adopt his 2006 law, Romney responded, "In its entirety, no.”

"Because it’s not even perfect for Massac ... Read more »
