GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is in London for the opening ceremonies of the 2012 summer games—part of a three-country world tour designed to build his foreign policy resume and shake down overseas donors. The Romney campaign will run television ads during the games touting the candidate's experience as CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where he was widely credited with turning around the scandal-plagued organizing effort.

What Romney doesn't talk about is how he succeeded in Utah with government help—lots of it—and how millions in assistance that he pried out of the feds ended up bankrolling subsidies, sweetheart deals, and giveaways for land developers and other well-connected Utahns.

Like other super-PACs, RGA Right Direction PAC is authorized to spend unlimited money supporting or opposing federal candidates, so long as it doesn't donate directly to them. So what is it doing giving $1 million to Rep. Mike Pence, Indiana's Republican candidate for governor?

If Pence were running to keep his 6th District congressional seat, his campaign couldn't accept a dime from Right Direction. Yet because he's running for an office in a state that allows unlimited PAC contributions to candidates, the super-PAC can wire cash directly to his war chest.

Romney Offends Britain: Questions ‘Disconcerting’ Signs U.K. Is Not Ready For The Olympics
by Noah Rothman | 9:29 am, July 26th, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney may have sparked his first international incident in an interview with NBC News while overseas. Romney is visiting the United Kingdom as part of a global tour that will take him to Poland and Israel before heading home for the GOP nominating convention. While in England, Romney sat down with NBC News anchor Brian Williams and said that he saw "disconcerting” signs that England is not ready for the Olympics, both in the nation’s security preparations and the public’s enthusiasm for the games.

"It’s hard to know just how well it will turn out,” Romney said after being asked if the United Kingdom was ready for the Olympics. "There are a few things that were disconcerting – the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials ... Read more »

The Aurora theater shooting has spurred new debates about gun control laws in America, but could it also play a role in the ongoing health care debate? Three of the five hospitals that treated victims of the shooting say they will limit or even forgive medical bills for patients who were wounded in the attack, many of whom are still being treated. Most of the wounded are expected to have medical costs in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars and many appear to have inadequate or non-existent coverage.

A group of legal experts have published a report which contains 130 cases that can be qualified as police brutality against Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York.

Researchers at NYU and Fordham University have concluded that NYPD officers acted beyond their powers during their intense crackdown against Occupy protesters.

Findings from the eight-month study serve to validate months of claims that demonstrators were, in fact, mistreated by officers.

The study found that police used batons, scooters, horses, and metal barricades to inflict unnecessary force and intimidation on demonstrators.

President Obama's campaign continues to hammer presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney over the GOP challenger's refusal to release more of his tax returns. Romney has provided one year's record and promised a second year's worth of returns. But even some of his fellow Republicans now say that's not enough.

Obama's campaign launched a new TV ad this week, shining a spotlight on what is and isn't known about Romney's taxes, asking, "What is Mitt Romney hiding?"

So far, Romney and his family trusts have released their 2010 tax returns, which fill hundreds of pages. He got an extension for his 2011 return and has promised to release that as soon as it's ready, no later than mid-October.
