The massacre at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater has left at least a dozen innocents dead. This weekend also happens to mark the one-year anniversary of the Breivik massacre in Norway. As Coloradans, along with the rest of the nation, come to grips with the Aurora killing, there is much to learn from the Norwegians about how to confront evil—and how not to.

July 22 - U.S. prosecutors and European regulators are close to arresting individual traders and charging them with colluding to manipulate global benchmark interest rates, according to people familiar with a sweeping investigation into the rate-rigging scandal.

Federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., have recently contacted lawyers representing some of the individuals under suspicion to notify them that criminal charges and arrests could be imminent, said two of those sources who asked not to be identified because the investigation is ongoing.

WASHINGTON - Unfazed by growing bipartisan criticism on Capitol Hill, Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann is broadening her allegations of Islamic infiltration in the U.S. government, accusing Democrat Keith Ellison of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a group she says is seeking "America's demise."

"He has a long record of being associated with [the Council on American-Islamic Relations] and with the Muslim Brotherhood," Bachmann told conservative radio and TV show host Glenn Beck on Thursday night.

As the Occupy movement, and the new culture of resistance it has spawned, continues to grow and diversify, there is an obvious dilemma that will have to be worked out if we are serious about changing American society in any meaningful way. Of the many obstacles facing what, from our current vantage point, looks to be the only light shining on the dark and blotted American landscape, one stands out for its menacing and ubiquitous presence in American social life.

Something very interesting is happening.

There’s been so much corruption on Wall Street in recent years, and the federal government has appeared to be so deeply complicit in many of the problems, that many people have experienced something very like despair over the question of what to do about it all.

But there’s something brewing that looks like it might eventually turn into a blueprint to take on the financial services industry: a plan to allow local governments to take on the problem of neighborhoods blighted by toxic home loans and foreclosures through the use of eminent domain. I can't speak for how well this program will work, but it's certaily been effective in scaring the hell out of Wall Street.

Under the proposal, towns would essentially be seizing and condemning the man-made mess resulting from the housing bubble. Cooked up by a small group of businessmen and ex-venture capitalists, the audacious idea falls under the category of "That’s so crazy, it ... Read more »

The gun-rights group’s Friday night webcast barely touched on the Colorado shooting; most of the show was devoted to bashing the U.N. for trying to curb global arms sales. James Warren reports.

Spain drags the eurozone closer to the edge of collapse despite winning the backing of finance ministers from the single currency's major economies for a €100bn bank rescue fund

Romney signed a ban on assault weapons as Massachusetts governor, but as the presumptive Republican nominee, he now bills himself as the candidate who will protect gun owners’ rights.

Obama called for reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons during his 2008 presidential campaign. But since his election, he hasn’t sought to get that done or pushed other gun control proposals.

People’s nasty traits have a way of revealing themselves on social networks: in writing. Or rather in how they write. That means an analysis of how someone tweets could reveal whether he or she is narcissistic, Machiavellian, or psychopathic, according to researchers who plan to present their findings at DefCon next week.

AURORA, Colo. (AP) — The shooting suspect accused in a deadly rampage inside a Colorado theater planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said Saturday, receiving deliveries by mail that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to rig his apartment with dozens of bombs.

Much of my recent book “Back to Our Future” is focused on how 1980s popular culture created many of the perverse stories we still tell ourselves today. Through movies, video games, toys and television shows of that decade, children were specifically taught whom to love and whom to hate. We were inculcated to fear government scientists (“E.T.”), EPA officials (“Ghostbusters”) and municipal governments (the various police officials that cop heroes had to “go rogue” against). We were also taught to love the military (“Top Gun”) and the super-rich (“Silver Spoons,” “The Toy,” “The Secret to My Success”).

The presumptive GOP nominee finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to convince skeptical voters someone can serve as a firm’s President, Chairman of the Board, chief executive officer, sole stockholder, junior janitor, cafeteria server in a plastic hairnet and still have absolutely nothing to do with the direction of the company or anything that’s going on. You might say he’s invoking a modified Wall Street bankers’ defense.

THE DOLLAR is in trouble. That’s clear, and it’s been true for a while.

The cornerstone of the global economic system has long been the greenback. In the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the oil shocks that brought on inflation, the value of the dollar relative to other currencies could not be maintained, so countries moved away from pegging their currencies to America’s. But still, the almighty dollar was used by countries all over the world for their reserves. The reserves provided backing for the currency and the country. They were a bank account that could be drawn upon in times of need. If oil prices shot up, a crop failed or lenders demanded their money back, there was a stockpile of money that could be used.

President Obama is slamming Mitt Romney for heading companies that were "pioneers in outsourcing U.S. jobs,” while Romney is accusing Obama of being "the real outsourcer-in-chief.”

These are the dog days of summer and the silly season of presidential campaigns. But can we get real, please?

The American economy has moved way beyond outsourcing abroad or even "in-sourcing.” Most big companies headquartered in America don’t send jobs overseas and don’t bring jobs here from abroad.

WASHINGTON -- In the immediate aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, the debate over gun control policy has more or less centered on whether it's an appropriate time to even have a debate.

But several lawmakers have demanded that the government not shy about tackling the legislative issue. Mayor Michael Bloomberg set the tone when he urged the two presidential candidates to outline their policies with respect to federal gun laws. And now, Sen. Frank Lautenberg's (D-N.J.) office is saying that he plans to reintroduce legislation that would curtail the ability of a shooter to fire at length without reloading.
