The Lies That Lead to WarJune 27, 2014 As the exploding crisis in Iraq spotlights once again the tragic record of American policy in the Middle East, Bill speaks with investigative journalist Charles Lewis, whose new book, 935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity details the many government falsehoods that have led us into the current nightmare. Lewis details the deceptions and illusions that have caused “most Americans and their elected representatives to completely ignore facts, logic and reason in the rush to war.” A complicit partner, he says, is a media intent on preserving the status quo and never offending the ruling elite. Lewis tells Bill, “An outrageous thing happened. We lost $2 trillion. More than 100,000 people died. Folks are going to be maimed for life in the tens of thousands… And no one has ever acknowledged that this was a war on a lark. It was a complete war of choice, because a certain little faction wanted to do it and they orchestrated it… Did they make statements that weren’t true? The answer is yes.” This week’s show begins with an essay by Bill on the foresight of the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, who, after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, predicted the trap in which the West would fall attempting to interfere in the Middle East. Excellent discussion. Thanks for posting, LIB. --------- Playing fast and loose with facts, logic, and reason, by both politicians and the media, is what led us into Viet Nam and Iraq (both times). It's also what stampeded passage of the Patriot Act, signing away precious civil rights. And which led America to make disastrous impoverishing economic policies for its middle class.
In the same way, playing fast and loose with facts, logic, and reason by America's so-called "Christian" clergy is what allows a person such as (for example) Mitt Romney to be a member in good standing of a church which claims to follow Jesus' teachings. (e.g. by ignoring Mat 6: 19, in Jesus' own words - “Stop storing up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal.")
Jesus' repeated message was - Listen, heed and obey what I say, or you will not enter the Kingdom of God. What part of "Stop storing up treasures for yourself on earth" does Mitt Romney and the Mormon Church not understand? They call this form of disobeying Jesus' instructions, "earthly success." That's a euphemism for sin that clearly came straight from Lucifer's own manual for deception.
Even when I suppose the Bible's words are true (which I don't), America's churches don't even stick to THAT reality. (Mark 10:21, again Jesus' direct instructions regarding money - To enjoy eternal life in heaven, first follow the commandments, "Then sell everything you have. Give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.") Jesus' plan for his followers' money was to eschew earthly pleasures for yourself, and give it to the poor. Jesus was also repeatedly clear that whomever doesn't listen, heed, and obey his instructions, won't get in.
How to get around that? Through institutionalized dishonesty in our churches themselves, which ignore Jesus' instructions from their pulpits. Hence Pat Robertson's church made him a billionaire, and the Mormon Church could well be a trillionaire (they haven't opened their books to the public since the 1950's).
Jesus never addressed abortion, gay sex, or when life begins, let alone with the sort of unambigious clarity that he gave regarding how his followers should treat money. To distract from clearly not following Jesus' instructions in their own lives, Christians are taught to demonize others.
It's not Jesus which makes much of American Christianity a joke these days. It's the huge mass of happily ignorant, gullible, easily-manipulated followers.
This is the same formula of dishonesty which leads us into wars, poverty, giving up our civil rights, and other bad decisions in our government.
The failure by our modern-day politicians and media to acknowledge the lies they propagate (and hence institutionalize) which Moyers and Lewis discuss, is long pre-dated by our churches' similar longstanding institutionalized lies to their gullible parishioners, regarding Jesus' clear instructions what must be done with money, to enjoy everlasting life.
You might say our churches pioneered the evil sophistry by which today's politicians and media spinners lie to and manipulate us.
Trapped in a world I never signed up for...
