Take a 71 year old doctor and make him the country's only coroner. For his chief assistant, his soon to be wife, who frequently has to leave the morgue to open her noodle shop. A large, sweet man who is mentally disabled but knows just what to do at the morgue and when. Add other assistants, party officials and the body of a Communist officer who just happens to be a bomb set to explode (luckily he was accidentally frozen solid in the morgue's new refrigerator) and you have the making a of clever and funny mystery series set in Laos in the vacuum left by the withdrawal of the US from Vietnam. By the way, Dr. Siri Paiboun is not even present at the morgue as all this unfolds: he is at a party function in the north and is about to be kidnapped by displaced hill people, the Hmong, as he heads home. Quite a great deal going on here: humor, social and political commentary and yes, the tragic outcome of the pogo stick. Written in 2008.
I will definitely work my way through the series!
