Everyone knows of Bizet's most famous opera, "Carmen", but the lesser performed and known "Pearl Fishers" is an especially lush and melodic work. The story, set in India, is not one of the better ones, starting off well enough and then just fizzling out at the end. But getting there is a beautiful journey. This famous first act duet has the two main male leads (Nadir, a forest runner, and Zurga, the village chief) swearing nothing will destroy their friendship. Sounds sincere until Leila appears.
We have here a production of the Philadelphia Opera with two very well prepared singers who are great fun to watch. I tell myself it is all about observing their wonderful breath control. Enjoy.
