"Brassed Off" is English slang for fed up, and fed up these miners are. But they are also members of a colliery brass band, a century old tradition in the UK.
Margaret Thatcher left office in 1990. The "pit" in this film was closed in 1993, surely one of the many victims of her policies. This wonderful film stars a young Ewan McGregor and the always excellent Pete Postelthwaite. The actual Grimethorpe Colliery Band provides the music. The band was formed in 1917 and has won numerous competitions. Although one must wonder how these bands could possibly be. According to Margaret Thatcher there is no society or community; only families looking out for themselves. I would say she couldn't be more wrong.
This clip is a horn version of the adagio 2nd movement of Rodrigo's guitar Concierto de Aranjuez. Wonderful music and cinematography. Link to full movie follows.
