A few months ago I decided to re-visit a favorite movie from my childhood on NYC's "Million Dollar Movie", where they ran a film almost 24/7 for a week before changing. If it hadn't been dubbed, I'd be fluent in Japanese, no question. I bought the Criterion version and prepared myself for Raymond Burr to narrate over the horror. He never appeared. And I realized I was watching the very original movie and what a treat! It was wonderful and so much better. (FYI, the Americanized version is also included to compare.)
A few things to note: great, textured b&w film, atmospheric and dark; a wonderful urgent, haunting original score and very good special effects for the time (1954). If you want to dig a bit deeper, you can see on display the national nightmare created by the two atomic blasts on Japan, barely a decade prior. And even more terrible, the scientific technolgy used to kill Gozilla.
