For non-classical viewers out there, I grant you the world probably doesn't need another recording of this wonderful piece of music. What is different about this recording? The presence of the world's leading tenor, perhaps ever, in the period of recordings that would make such comparisons possible. Jonas Kaufmann is the rare heldentenor ( a tenor with a powerful voice suited to singing heroic roles, esp in Wagner) to come along with a tenor that sounds more like a baritone and a range, with that heavy voice, which is astounding.
For all of you who can't follow my delight, let me put it this way. Like all of you followers of fantasy football or baseball, trying to collect your ideal teams, classical music followers are always trying to put together their ideal casts. This recording hasn't quite done it for me, but, still, wow!
