A new report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee On Investigations asserts Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard have used “aggressive” offshore ploys to save or defer billions in U.S. corporate tax.

Executives from both tech giants, as well as a representative of HP auditor Ernst & Young, are scheduled to appear at a 2 P.M. subcommittee hearing today to answer questions from the subcommittee. HP and Microsoft cooperated with the investigation and are among “hundreds of companies’’ that are engaging in such offshore manipulations, Subcommittee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Michigan) noted at a press briefing this morning. He added that multinationals have been exploiting a mix of loopholes created by Internal Revenue Service regulations, loopholes created by Congress itself, and loopholes the corporate lawyers and accountants have created through technical and questionable readings of the tax code.

In his closest interaction with a room full of Latinos since that time he had to yell at the kitchen staff for spilling the good Bordeaux, Mitt Romney appeared in Florida on Wednesday at a Spanish-language forum on Univision.

His appearance was ironic, since he famously campaigned against bilingual education when running for governor of Massachusetts and during the GOP presidential primary, but that's beside the point.

Continuing a Romney campaign standard, most of Mitt's responses ignored specifics, instead opting to smooth out the harsh rhetoric seen during the circus that was the primary (electrocuted Mexicans, anyone?).

Can Romney possibly recover? A survey conducted between Sept. 12 and Sept. 16 by the Pew Research Center — before the “47 percent victim” video came to light – showed Obama ahead of Romney 51% to 43% among likely voters.

That’s the biggest margin in the September survey prior to a presidential election since Bill Clinton led Bob Dole, 50% to 38% in 1996.

And, remember, this recent poll was done before America watched Romney belittle almost half the nation.

For the last several days I’ve been deluged with calls from my inside-the-beltway friends telling me “Romney’s dead.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks Corp. is about to turn up the heat on the single-serve coffee market, and someone might get burned.

The Seattle-based company says it will start selling its new single-serve brewer online this week for $199. It plans to start selling the machine in its ubiquitous cafes next month.

The arrival of the Verismo, which was announced earlier this year, comes amid intensifying competition in the rapidly growing market for single-serve brewers and the coffee pods they use.

Italy's top court has upheld guilty verdicts against 23 Americans, all but one of whom are CIA agents, over the 2003 abduction of an Egyptian cleric.

The 22 CIA agents and one US Air Force pilot were being tried in absentia in one of the world's biggest court cases against the United States' "extraordinary rendition" program.

The program was set up to interrogate alleged Islamist militants after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The radical Islamist opposition figure, known as Abu Omar, was allegedly snatched from a street in Milan in 2003, flown to a US base in Germany and on to Cairo where he says he was tortured for seven months.

Forty Republican members of the United States Senate betrayed veterans today when decided that denying President Obama a victory was more important than spending $1 billion to create jobs for vets.

The Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012 would have spent $1 billion over five years to put veterans to work tending to federal lands, and in the nation’s police and fire departments. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) based her plan of FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but Republicans opposed the bill because they said there is no proof that it would work.

Republican Sen. Tom Coburn claimed that there is no evidence that jobs for vets will work, “What we have is a bill that’s brought to the floor that has good intentions behind but shows the absolute laziness of congress in terms of really digging things out. issued their duplication report on the job training programs for veterans, four of them do exactly the same thing. None of them have a metric. So we don’t know if they ... Read more »
