WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited an Ohio coal mine this month to promote jobs in the coal industry, workers who appeared with him at the rally lost pay because their mine was shut down.

The Pepper Pike company that owns the Century Mine told workers that attending the Aug. 14 Romney event would be both mandatory and unpaid, a top company official said Monday morning in a West Virginia radio interview.

A group of employees who feared they'd be fired if they didn't attend the campaign rally in Beallsville, Ohio, complained about it to WWVA radio station talk show host David Blomquist. Blomquist discussed their beefs on the air Monday with Murray Energy Chief Financial Officer Rob Moore.

Six US army soldiers and three marines escaped criminal charges but received administrative punishments for mistakenly burning Qur'ans and urinating on the corpses of Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, US military officials said Monday.

US military leaders widely condemned the incident revealed earlier this year. The Qur'an burning triggered riots and retribution killings: two US troops were shot by an Afghan soldier and two US military advisers were gunned down at their desks at the interior ministry.

ROLAND MARTIN (CNN contributor): Just curious -- how do you deal with folks who lie? So, for instance, I heard one of the women say, "Oh my God, taxes have gone up." You look at the stimulus bill, actually, 40 percent of that is actually tax cuts. So when you look at analysis of what has happened, taxes have actually -- they have not gone up. So when somebody lies in the film, what do you do?

Amid complaints from liberal and progressive groups, five corporations have dropped their support for the right-wing policy group called the American Legislative Exchange Council.

General Electric, The Western Union Company, Sprint Nextel Corporation, Symantec Corporation, and Reckitt Benckiser Group all told Color Of Change that they no longer supported ALEC.

“These significant developments, coupled with recent withdrawals from ALEC by companies like Walgreens and GM, further prove that everyday people working together to hold corporations accountable can achieve tremendous change,” said ColorOfChange.org Executive Director Rashad Robinson.
