Dear Karl,

I'm writing to congratulate you on your remarkable column this week in the Wall Street Journal.

I know the Journal's standards have dropped precipitously in the five years since Rupert Murdoch bought the paper. Still, your ability to get the Editorial page to publish musings as illogical, nonsensical and ridiculous as what you wrote this week -- well, it's just amazing.

HARRISBURG - On the same day a judge cleared the way for the state's new voter identification law to take effect, the Corbett administration abandoned plans to allow voters to apply online for absentee ballots for the November election and to register online to vote.

A spokesman for the Department of State said county elections officials told the agency that implementing the new online initiatives as well as voter ID requirements was too much to handle less than three months before the election.

Speaking with the Huffington Post Thursday afternoon, MSNBC president Phil Griffin fired a strong convention season shot at rival network CNN, labeling the cable outlet “desperate” for its claims to being the only “unbiased” coverage of the upcoming nominating events.

Responding to a CNN press release promising that the network would feature the only “unbiased” coverage of the conventions, Griffin said, “When you’re desperate, you start calling different things out.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New rules that reduce the number of early voting days in Florida are an unfair burden on minorities, a U.S. federal court said in a ruling that upheld the U.S. Justice Department's decision to block the changes in five of the state's 67 counties.

The Justice Department and civil rights groups had argued that a 2011 Florida law allowing counties to reduce the window for early voting from 96 hours per week to as few as 48 made it more difficult for minorities to vote than white.

A cupcake shop called Crumb and Get It, based in Radford, Virginia, declined the opportunity to be the backdrop for a visit by Joe Biden yesterday. Its owner doesn't like Obama much, and says "he's hoping folks will understand he just didn't want to be part of a photo op for an administration whose policies he doesn’t agree with."

No problem! I wouldn't want to be part of a Romney photo-op, so I understand. But there's more:

His Votes in Congress Added $6.8 Trillion to Our Nation’s Federal Deficits

After properly accounting for Rep. Ryan’s tax cuts, his budget plan would never come close to balancing, and would add trillions more in debt.

The reputation of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) as a fiscal hawk is at odds with his record of supporting nearly every single budget-busting law of the past decade. Since 2001 he has voted for at least 65 separate pieces of deficit- and debt-increasing legislation, with the total tab for all those votes a whopping $6.8 trillion in cumulative deficits.

Paul Ryan slammed President Obama on Thursday for failing to rescue an auto factory in his Wisconsin district — one that closed in 2008, under President George W. Bush.

The latest attack highlights the complicated politics of the auto rescue for Ryan, who was one of only a handful of Republicans to vote in favor of the 2008 bailout that President Bush signed as a stopgap measure to prevent the industry from going under.

Prime minister’s office says Shimon Peres should not speak out on Iran as he is too prone to mistakes

Aides to Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu launched a stinging rebuke to the country’s president, Shimon Peres, after he said that Israel should not act alone in launching military action against Iran’s nuclear programme.

“Shimon Peres forgets what the role of the president of Israel is,” officials from Netanyahu’s office were quoted in the Israeli media as saying. The aides offered examples from the past when they said Peres’s judgment had been wrong.

A company controlled by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital ran an unlawful campaign to suppress a potential union in the 1980s, according to US court and federal agency documents.

Key Airlines, an early investment for the private equity firm founded by a young Mitt Romney and two associates, broke the law by attempting to coerce and then dismiss two pilots who tried to organise a union. Two months after a union vote failed, Bain agreed to sell Key Airlines at a large profit.
